Description

This is one-week unit that is intended for high school students. It centers on bias and includes a mix of powerpoint resources, worksheets, discussions, and student reflections. You can use this resource to support you with sociology, psychology, philosophy, SEL, advisory, or homeroom.

Brief Unit Overview: Understanding and Confronting Bias: A High School Unit (One Week)

Lesson one: An introductory presentation of what bias is, what types of bias there are, and some examples of bias.

Lesson two: Student reflection and worksheet. Focus on personal identity, and writing reflection on diversity.

Lesson three: Powerpoint presentation on the effects of bias in our society. Statistics and discussion; racism and other "isms."

Lesson four: Focused student discussions; bias and personal experiences.

Lesson five: Presentation on making personal changes to combat bias; unit reflection and close.

The objectives of this unit are as follows:

· Students will understand what bias is and how it affects society

· Students will gain a better understanding of their own perspectives, as well as others around them

· Students will develop mindsets that will empower them to counteract bias and promote respect and equity for all

Note: This unit can be taught in-person or within a distance-learning model. All of the materials will translate into the virtual space. The only modification you would need to do is during the small group discussions: instead of in-person groups you can instead offer virtual breakout spaces (on whatever platform you use for class).
