What educators are saying

My students loved using this resource for history. They were engaged in the resource and had no trouble getting started. It didn’t take much time to prepare this resource.
My students enjoyed being able to be more hands-on with History content. The content was good and informative. It was also appropriately at the level that is appropriate for 5th graders.

Before you read the details about this Civil War and the Changing Nation interactive notebook pack, I want to share a few details about the notebooks that precede this one.

This Interactive Social Studies Journal is part THREE of my TOP SELLING notebook set. If you are interested in getting information on the popular bundled pack that I and many others absolutely LOVE click HERE.

Don't forget to also purchase NOTEBOOK 4, which is 23 additional passages taking you from WWI to September 11th. It picks up right where notebook 3 ends. Click HERE for all of the details.

If you decide to get the bundled pack that comes before this one (you don't have to do notebook 1 and 2 to use this one), you are going to get 34 close reading passages that take you from Native Americans all the way through Westward Expansion. In addition, you get interactive activities for all passages. PLUS, my government and maps/globes interactive notebook packs are also included in the bundled set. I feel sure you will love it as many hundreds of others have.

-----------------------------------------------

About this notebook....This notebook #3 pack has been requested for months, so I am so happy to finally release it.

This interactive social studies notebook covers topics related to the Civil War and the Changing Nation. It is sure to get your students excited about studying U.S. History. Your students will read about historical events while practicing reading strategies. In addition, they will reflect and write about what they have read as they complete the interactive journal activities.

My students in the past have always loved and taken great pride in their journals. Their journal is also a great resource to pull out at the end of the year for state testing and reread about important events. What a great bonus!

This interactive social studies journal includes the following:

*13 Close Reading Passages

*Teacher discussion questions for each passage

*13 interactive comprehension notebook activities (one per close reading)

Please do click the 'preview' above to get a glimpse of included items.

The 13 close reading passages were written with 4th-5th graders in mind, but you may find they are also valuable resources for older students that need the social studies concepts broken into smaller parts to better understand.

Because these passages are non-fiction, and because they cover some of the same topics that are touched on in even high school classes (after all, the facts are the facts, no matter what grade you are required to teach them), there may be a few situations where these passages would work for grades well above fifth.

NOTE: These passages can all be purchased separately in my store, but when bought separately, you do NOT get the interactive activities. I only include those in my bundled interactive notebook packs.

Just a few more notes…. When I write my passages, I try to sum up the major events surrounding the topic of the passage. There may be other details you would like to include that I did not include, so you can pull other resources for that.

My goal is to write an article about the topic that is not as overwhelming as the often wordy textbooks. Textbooks can sometimes provide so much information that fourth and fifth graders cannot even figure out what the important event is.

The push today in the elementary classroom is to teach the kids the skills of close reading. Focus on and analyze a shorter passage. Hold the details of the passage under a microscope to really examine it. Teach a reading lesson while also introducing a social studies topic... it makes covering the social studies content so much easier.

**** These readings are not going to be as detailed as say a history book. All information is accurate like a history book would be, but they are short, sweet, and to the point. My purpose in writing these was to include as many of the important details as possible in a short article.

I did not use any clipart with the individual passages because I wanted the focus to be on the words and not images.
