This comprehensive 68-page/slide unit is divided into three sections that include the following resources:
INTRODUCE AND REINFORCE
- POWERPOINT: Let’s Explore States of Matter is a 18-slide interactive PowerPoint—with three video clips—that highlights the characteristics of matter, defines and gives examples of solids, liquid, gases, and plasma, and compares and contrasts physical vs. chemical changes. It also includes a Word Power review activity.
- ACTIVITY BOOK: States of Matter: Characteristics and Changes uses an engaging cut-and-glue format to reinforce the characteristics of and changes to the four states and includes two review activities.
- ANCHOR CHART: States of Matter is an 11 x 17 inch anchor chart—illustrated with colorful photos—that defines the four natural states of matter.
- BONUS SORTING CARDS: This set includes four photo cards for each state of matter.
EXTEND AND ENRICH
- 4 SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS: This unit includes four science experiments that explore chemical vs. physical changes in matter and the unique characteristics of carbon dioxide gas and non-Newtonian fluids.
- PRINTABLE: Fun Facts about Gases uses a fill-in-the-blank format to introduce different types of common gases.
- 12 WORD WALL VOCABULARY CARDS in two formats. The large cards are 3 inches tall and 8 inches wide, and the small cards measure 3.75 inches tall by 5 inches wide. Each word is paired with a colorful photo to increase memory and retention. The large set also includes more than 20 vocabulary-building activities, games, and templates. (See vocabulary list below.)
REVIEW AND ASSESS
- REVIEW ACTIVITY: What’s the Matter? challenges student to use a checklist of characteristics to identify different states of matter.
- UNIT ASSESSMENT covers the key concepts and vocabulary words introduced in the unit.
