What educators are saying

These were the most awesome figurative language notes ever! My students loved the presentation and I think because it was so pretty it increased their level of "ooh I want to do my work now," feelings.
Excelent tool! Students were engaged while taking notes, and were able to quickly refer to their notes when they needed to.

Description

Need notes and practices to introduce types of figurative language? This minilesson is the perfect for defining and identifying SIMILE, METAPHOR, HYPERBOLE, IDIOM, PERSONIFICATION, ONOMATOPOEIA, ALLITERATION! With guided notes and 3 close reading passages, students will be able to distinguish 7 types of figurative language, identify examples, and explain their meanings. The graphic organizer is color-coded to classify figurative language terms into 3 categories: comparisons, sound devices, and descriptive tools.

Begin by reviewing the notes page so that students can first define these terms. Then ask students to match the figurative language type to their definition and category in the match-and-sort practice activity. Once they have the terms and definitions down, add in more challenges with the 3 close reading passages! For practicing the skills, excerpts from The Wizard of Oz text are chunked into 3 parts for teacher modeling, group practice, and independent application. An exit slip with 2 questions is also provided for a formative assessment at the end of the lesson!

Scaffolded student materials and completed teacher answer keys are included as a printable PDF or Google Slides!
