Description

This workbook will introduce you to Tudor poetry. Learn about the different forms of sonnet developed in Renaissance Europe. Look at the poetry of Edmund Spenser and Lady Mary Wroth. Spenser was a leading poet of the age, who wrote one of the longest poems in the English language and developed his own form of sonnet. Wroth was the first woman to publish a series of poems, and a work in prose.

Study the literary devices used and developed at the time, and the themes being explored. Use what you learn to write essays in the poems discussed.

Take it further by reading more poems of the period:

  • Written the Night Before His Execution by Chidiock Tichbourne.
  • When I was Fair and Young by Queen Elizabeth I.
  • Fotheringhay by Mary Queen of Scots.
