Tsunami STEM Activity (Surviving a Tsunami in the Village Challenge)

Use these 56 Pages of Surviving a Tsunami in the Village (Natural Disaster) STEM Challenge to let your students learn how to work as engineers to make tsunami proof houses that can stand the force of a tsunami without being swept away. Explain to them that this is like what some civil engineers do as their jobs.

Design Process Worksheets and Rubrics are included to introduce the Engineering Design Process while doing this Tsunami STEM/ STEAM activity or project. There is a color and are black & white version copy of the worksheet and rubrics to go through each of the process.

Students design, build, and test 3 sets of village houses made of three different materials using only the materials provided together with some constraints to make this activity more challenging. To successfully complete this challenge, the villages must remain standing after going through a tsunami simulation. This is a great engaging activity for students or a group/ team enabling them to think critically and use their engineering and problem-solving skills. Use the rubrics to assess students’ performance once they finish this task.
