Description
Students who have read The City of Ember know at the end that the city was all underground. As an enrichment activity, have students read an article, with pictures, about an incredible underground rescue: the rescue of the Thai boys' soccer team from a flooded cave in 2018.
Twelve boys and their coach were exploring the cave when an unexpected flood drove them deeper and deeper into the cave. They finally took refuge on a precarious rock edge more than three miles deep within the cave. All the tunnels leading to them were flooded to the roof, and nobody even knew if they were still alive.
This incredible story tells how a few British cave-diving hobbyists -- not military and not professionals -- volunteered to look for the boys. Incredibly, they found them, starving on their rock, nine days later. The question then was: how to get them out?
This incredible story was told in the National Geographic documentary The Rescue, which is featured on Disney Plus. That film, together with this article, is a great real-world story of heroism and courage that goes along splendidly with reading City of Ember.
