    3. to prepare your students to think critically

No matter your reason, this Transcendentalism Activities Bundle has you covered!

What's inside the Transcendentalism Activities Bundle?

    • Transcendental Circles: Skip the boring lecture, and introduce your students to Transcendentalism with an authentic, engaging Transcendental Circle! This activity focuses on five introductory concepts related to Transcendentalism: the meaning of transcendental, key figures and their philosophies, the role of nature, the roots in Idealism, and the literary tradition. Then, students take on a role: The Intellectual, The Philosopher, The Dreamer, The Idealist, and the Poet to engage with the introductory concepts.
    • Emerson's "Nature" Activities: Encourage students to use their “transparent eyeball” to understand and analyze Transcendentalism and Emerson's "Nature." To start, students will read and explain the original passage from “Nature” related to the “transparent eyeball.” Next, they’ll complete a reflection activity in which they will use their senses to connect to their own transparent eyeball. Finally, students will support, reject, or qualify Emerson’s main claim using their personal experiences as evidence.
    • Thoreau's Walden Workbook: Encourage personal Transcendental reflection as an engaging activity to understand and analyze Thoreau's Walden! In this workbook, students will read and analyze several passages from Thoreau’s “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For” from Walden, and then make connections with their own lives through reflective activities. This resource can be used as a standalone activity to teach Walden or as an activity to supplement students’ reading of the book/chapter.
