Description

This reader is designed as a source book for high-school (or higher) literature or philosophy courses. It contains a selection of writings from leading Transcendentalist thinkers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, as well as biographical introductions to each author. All main texts are in the public domain. Due to the lengthy nature of the works and the limited time available in most classes, certain texts have been edited down to make them more practical for use in the classroom and more approachable for students (clearly marked). For example, the reader contains only select chapters of Thoreau's Walden.

Also included is an introduction to Transcendentalism (from the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy) and two contemporary, satirical short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and Bayard Taylor (both of whom were critical of the Transcendentalists).

The text has been arranged into a visually pleasing, easy-to-read, 2-column format with clear headings, a table of contents, and pictures scattered throughout.
