Description
These back to school tracing line pages are perfect for helping develop the fine motor skills needed for controlling a pen when writing. Whether your students are just beginning to use a pen, or are needing additional practice, using 'path of motion tracing lines' will help develop the skills needed for writing.
Learning how to control a pen or pencil is an important part of the writing process. These school tracing line cards have been created to strengthen and develop the fine motor skills required to control the pencil in the various directions and strokes needed for writing. It also allows you to notice and work on their pencil grip without the focus being on creating letters or story writing.
Pen strokes included:
- zigzag
- curves
- circles
- waves and valleys
- diagonal
- horizontal
- verticle lines
- continuous and pen lift lines
Each page has a 'grounding arrow', this helps the students both the way the card should be sitting in front of them and in which direction they should be moving their pen. They then start their pen at the beginning character (e.g the student reading) and keep tracing the line until they get to the end character (e.g. the pile of books).
Included you will find:
- 25 whole-page school themed tracing sheets with 3 or 4 path of motion tracing lines per page
- 6 pages with pen lift strokes that practice the formations needed to write letters of the alphabet.
- A trace and color picture
- A black and white version of each page which you can print on colored paper to save ink or print as a worksheet.
To Set Up
To allow you to use these pages again and again I recommend either laminating or putting in a page protector and providing students with a dry-erase marker.
You can also extend their fine skill development further by providing students with pompoms, counters, or mini erasers and having them cover the lines (tongs will take this to the next level!).
I have found that my students benefit from regular practice with this skill throughout the year, so I have sets that I swap out regularly to keep them engaged in the activity during center time.
