Description

This is one of my students' favorite art projects! Many teens have had tobacco education for years so this is a fresh approach to reiterate the negative effects of the number one preventable killer of adults in the United States!

This lesson covers tobacco dangers, vaping, and media literacy ad appeals!

>> Integrated Skills Based, Content Based / Knowledge Based. The best of both worlds.

>> Meets HS/MS National Health Education Standards.

>> Meets HS/MS Technical Subjects Health Common Core Standards.

>> Meets Washington State’s rigorous Health Education Standards.

This lesson includes:

1. 9 pages of step-by-step teacher directions that follow a PowerPoint

2. An 69-slide Ad Appeals/Tobacco and Vaping Dangers PowerPoint!

3. "Top 10 Ad appeals Handout"

4. 15 ads on a PowerPoint where students guess and correct the appeals used

5. "Tobacco Pack" Template

☑️ DAY 1:

1. This day starts with students learning about the dangers of cigarettes and vaping, and learn how tobacco impacts the heart, lungs, and actually almost every organ in the body! Students also learn a little about the tobacco industry and their advertising motives.

2. Next, students learn about the top ad appeals and how advertisers manipulate us and play on our emotions to manipulate us to buy things.

3. Next, students guess the ad appeals advertisers use on 15 different products. (Promises, Excitement, Testimonials, Star Power...)

4. Lastly today, they start in on a fun art project where THEY become tobacco advertisers and design a cover for a cigarette pack using at least one ad appeal.

It's a flip on the normal "Bad Things About Tobacco" idea (and some teachers choose to keep the usual "dangers of tobacco" theme - it's totally up to you!) But, student really have fun when they realize just how manipulative they'll have to be to get teen buyers to use a product that everyone knows is bad for them!

DAY 2:

1. Today begins with some dangers of tobacco and vaping videos.

2. A link to a website on "Why Vaping is Bad for You" is included.

3. Students continue working on their Tobacco Packs. The need to be sure to include which "Ad Appeals" their ad is using.

DAY 3:

1. If you want to give a third day for working on their art projects, you can!

My students really enjoyed the creativity of this art project, and they learn tobacco dangers and how advertisers manipulate us at the same time! Students always come up with some of the most creative and funny cigarette packs! (See more examples on "Preview.")
