Description

Looking to build strong critical thinking abilities, and a good way to practice team building?

This mini-unit sets up a hypothetical dilemma and asks students to offer solutions based on their own reasoning and problem-solving skills. The unit begins with a scenario of nuclear war and requires students to make decisions which may affect the survival of humans on Earth. Also included is a second scenario in which students decide the uses and importance of the few items they can salvage from a crashed plane. A final exercise asks students to decide how to use items in their life raft to be rescued. The purpose of this unit is to have students work together to reach consensus of a controversial issue. It helps them realize that sometimes there are no right and wrong answers.

I have used this mini-unit in coordination with reading novels like Hunger Games or with Humanities in discussing human crisis, but this minilesson is great to stand alone and gives two to three class periods of discussion and/or written group activity!
