Description

A 64-page printable PDF eBook for grades 6 and up offering an easy-to-understand method to teach analogies with plenty of practice.

This activity book teaches students how to analyze and classify analogies by relationship, category, and structure. Students who learn strategies to make and complete analogies benefit in many ways. They sharpen their reasoning skills as they analyze the subtleties of language and relationship presented in analogies. As students learn to understand simple word analogies, they move toward understanding more complex analogous relationships presented in literature, science, and history. Analogies are also a key component of many assessment and ability tests.

Analogies make comparisons between seemingly unrelated items. Comparing an unfamiliar item to an item that is more familiar increases understanding. The similarity between the items is based on the relationship being compared, not the items themselves. Initially it is easier for students to find similarities between related items. Gradually, however, we move students towards looking for similarities between unrelated items.

Activities develop sequentially with one skill building upon another. Students classify words with a common attribute and find exceptions. They then form pairs of related items. Next, they identify types of analogous relationships. They practice classifying different kinds of analogies and selecting words and word pairs to complete them. Finally, they create analogies.
