Theater Arts Comical Play Script Unit | Abdullahs Gold Middle Eastern Folk Tale

Part of a Bundle This engaging, comical unit and play (30 pages in length) with roles for 20+ students is suitable for students whether Social Studies class studying the country of India, Pakistan or used in a drama class. Students strengthen their reading (fluency), speaking (diction) and listening skills (restating) while learning to work cooperatively. Based on the Hindu folk tale by the same name, students will have an opportunity to:

• explore folk tales of the Hindu culture
• dramatize a folk tale with ORIGINAL songs created specifically for this piece
• and use their imaginations to express emotion through movement

The Story: Abdullah was one of the richest men in town, but you could easily mistake him for a beggar. It was his theory that since there were so many people out to rob a rich man, it was safe to pretend to be poor. And so he did.

But he really didn’t have to pretend. Stingy to the core he found it very easy to be poor. So what if people sniggered and children called out, “Kanjoos! Kanjoos!" (miser, miser), whenever he passed by in his worn-out clothes. Abdullah became more and more content with his growing pile of money as the years went by. But one night, something happens to Abdullahs' money and things were never the same for him.

HOW DO I USE THIS IN MY CLASSROOM? One way is to integrate with your vocal music teacher and present the play together! Your students can sing and accompany the song with drums, zylophone and/or mallet instruments or use the provided sound bytes instead. Or read this play and study its form and characterization, dialogue and plot.
