What educators are saying
Description
A student (and teacher) favorite - hands down!
The teacher reads a story about a city and instructs students to draw specific items onto their construction paper. The faster the teacher goes, and the more the students have to draw, the more frantic they become! This simulation is a PERFECT one to illustrate urbanization - and it's been adapted for United States history. In fact, it is nearly historically accurate and based on the growth of Chicago.
Students will draw a variety of things including tenements, factories, trains, churches, hospitals, and bars. The purpose of this activity is to foreshadow issues that arise in the Gilded Age including,
poverty
industrialization
pollution
alcoholism (temperance movement),
crime
disparities between the rich and poor
factory labor
strikes
labor unions
nativism
philanthropy
tenement housing
Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire
Homestead Act
Transcontinental Railroad
Cattle Industry Boom
Great Chicago Fire
Child labor
This comes with a completed lesson plan, a powerpoint with a warm-up, instructions with historically appropriate images, a video, an instruction guide for teachers (with timer suggestions), and a reflection handout for students. All you need to supply is the paper and markers!
This lesson has been teacher tested and student approved - it's one of their favorite lessons of the year!
Answer key for the student handout is located on the lesson plan.
