Description

Teach mood and suspense using one of literature's original scary stories, "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe. This Google Hyperdoc includes 7 different steps to take students through anticipatory activities, multiple readings, text analysis, and reflection. The hyperdoc concludes with a choice of two summative activities for students to demonstrate their learning. Utilizes Google Forms, videos, Google Docs, and Padlet. Links and teacher directions for use are included.

The steps included are:

1. Engage- Students choose multiple movie trailers and recuts to investigate the impact of setting, actions, and imagery on mood.

2. Explore- Includes three formats for students to read the story (Reader's Theater, short story, video narration) and react with debatable questions

3. Explain- Direct instruction video about mood, suspense, and author's craft

4. Apply- Students complete three activities to check their comprehension of the story, analyze important parts of the text, and investigate Poe's crafting of mood in the story.

5. Share- Students create and share a summative activity given two choices to demonstrate their understanding of mood within the story.

6. Reflect- Ideas and sentences starters to encourage students to reflect on their learning

7. Extend- Links to more resources about mood, suspense, and "The Tell-Tale Heart"
