The Story of the Georgia Colony - Trustee Period & Royal Period
Description
This purchase includes 2 separate stories - The Trustee period and the Royal Period and handouts for both. These stories are written in a simple, informative text that students can understand and enjoy!
Trustee Period
This is a 9-page story of the founding of the Georgia Colony - Trustee Period. It has great visuals, maps, and is easy to read. It aligns to the Georgia standards and includes vocabulary words such as Trustee Period, Charter of 1732, its rules and restrictions, reasons for the colony, James Oglethorpe, Savannah, Yamacraw Bluff, Highland Scots, Tomochichi, Malcontents, Salzburgers, Mary Musgrove, Yamacraws, crops produced, and the conflicts and struggles found within the Trustee period. A one-page graphic organizer handout is also included, which is editable.
This is an updated version of a previous product and does not include any prompts, but it is strictly a story. This allows for more flexibility in how you incorporate it into your unit.
Royal Period
The Royal Period of Georgia story is a 3 page concise, brief overview of this period and includes vocabulary such as the French and Indian War, Proclamation of 1763, governors of Royal period, Georgia's changing boundaries, as well as other related topics. A separate handout is also included for this period, as well as an optional one page handout that includes both the trustee and royal period.
These stories can be used as the main resource for learning the standard content, or as an introduction or review. I will often have my students gather in a circle and read the story together, incorporating read aloud strategies such as reflecting, questioning, relating to personal experiences, etc. After we have read the story, students will then individually complete the graphic organizer. I then follow up with a choice board or other processing assignment for deeper understanding.
Enjoy!
