What educators are saying

I love how this resource made it possible for my students to just go forward in the project without having to wait for me or the rest of the class to catch up. It was a great end-of-the-year project after we finished our April poetry unit.

Description

The Poet Research Project Unit is a research and poetry/literary analysis unit designed to be done in conjunction with/after a poetry unit, or with students that have enough knowledge of poetic devices to be able to analyze a poem.

The Poet Research Project Unit is extensive. It takes students, step-by-step through the process of research, analysis, drafting, and revision. Students use and analyze poems as primary source documents. They are also expected to find at least one other additional primary source (letter, journal, lecture, speech, etc.) from the poet.

This project is quite versatile. It works for 9th graders (or advanced 8th graders) doing their first big research paper. It's also good for older students who need a refresher, or seniors sharpening their skills in preparation for college. In the past, I have allowed students to choose musicians as their poets without needing to modify the unit much.

The included rubric can be edited to reflect the level of your students and your particular teaching focus.

This unit is more than 30 pages of resources. It contains the following:

-Teacher's Guide

-Guiding Research Question, Prompt and Project Instruction Sheet

-Preliminary Research/Poet Selection Worksheet

-Research Tips and Hints

-Online Resource Evaluation Sheet

-Two different styles of research organizers

-Extensive Poem Analysis Packet

-Extensive Thesis Writing/Evaluation Worksheet

-Paragraph-by-paragraph Outline

-Parenthetical Citation Cheat Sheet.

-Revision Checklist

-Peer Editing Worksheet

-Editable Rubric

-Common Core Standards Index
