The Pillars of Lent Readings and Lenten Planning Activity for Middle School

This resource contains three pages of middle school level informational readings for the Pillars of Lent, which are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. A student Lenten planning activity is also included.

Best used prior to Ash Wednesday, the three informational readings explain each pillar, provide the Catholic rationale, include relevant scripture passages, and offer ideas of how middle school students could uphold each pillar during Lent. These readings and the student activity are designed to get students thinking about much MORE than the typical question of, "What are you giving up for Lent?"

The student activity accompanying the readings asks students to consider what they have learned and write a plan that includes prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Two slightly different forms of this activity are included. One provides basic directions, while the second form of the activity is designed to be turned into a Lenten promise reminder bulletin board for your classroom.
