What educators are saying

INCREDIBLE resource- worked great with Ascension Press Bible timeline for kids series. Highly recommended
I did not use the entire resource, but that was only because I ran out of time. It fit perfectly with our textbook's (Sadlier) chapter on the Israelites' escape from Egypt.

Description

The purpose of this resource is to introduce students to or review the story of the Passover in the book of Exodus and how it is a prefigurement of the coming of Jesus and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Students will identify how different aspects of the first Passover foretell the Paschal Mystery and in particular, the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. Students will come away with a greater understanding of the story of the Passover and how it relates to our faith as Catholic Christians.

This resource can also be used to reinforce what students are learning in their religion curriculum, to meet religion standards, and to help prepare them for standardized tests like the NCEA IFG: ACRE.

Vocabulary terms used in this resource include: Israelites, Moses, Pharaoh, plagues, unblemished, unleavened bread, Passover, prefigurement, Paschal Mystery

A teacher/catechist could use these activities in a variety of ways depending on the ability and knowledge of his/her students.

Activities:

This resource includes three handouts (four pages total).

  • Handout 1: This page is a brief summary of the Passover story in Exodus and explanation of the terms prefigurement and Paschal Mystery. This is a good resource for students who need a refresher of the story or for students who might find the biblical account too difficult to read. Teachers may decide to have students read directly from Exodus 12:1-32 in lieu of this page or in addition to it.
  • Handout 2: (Includes two pages.)
  • Page 1: Students are given the different events from the Passover in a graphic organizer. They are to identify what these events prefigure in the coming of Jesus and the Holy Mass.
  • Page 2: This page has the answers to the first page for students to cut out and paste into the correct place in the graphic organizer. (Students may also write in the responses by hand if the teacher prefers.) *As an extra challenge for students, teachers may choose not to use page 2 and have the students try to figure out the prefigurements on their own.
  • Handout 3: Matching vocabulary term definitions and Passover events with related prefigurement. Perfect as an assessment.

This resource can be given to students as a paper handout or digitally on Easel by TpT. It can be used in a classroom setting as independent, partner, or group work. Teachers can incorporate these activities to fit in with their own teaching style or the needs of their particular students.
