The One and Only Ivan: Research and Write (After Reading)

I love completing these activities after I finish reading The One

and Only Ivan to my class. They love learning about the real Ivan, and so do I! The research and writing takes my class about 3 days to complete.

This download includes:

• 1 poster with 6 QR codes for safe research about the real Ivan
• "Field Notes" page for note-taking while researching
• 3 QR codes for videos of the real Ivan with room for note-taking
• Venn diagram: compare and contrast the fictional Ivan with the real Ivan
• 2 newspaper writing options for students to demonstrate their understandings: "Urban Gorilla Adopted by Zoo" (informational) and "Do Gorillas Belong in Cages?" (opinion)
• links and suggestions for the teacher to preview

Of course, it’s totally up to you how you wish to use these resources.

I like to give my students plenty of time to research on their own.

You may want to copy the “Field Notes” page double-sided depending

on how much time you are going to give your students.

The Venn diagram is great for hitting that compare and contrast standard (RI.2.9 or RI.3.9), while the writing topics are great for assessing those opinion writing, narrative writing, and point of view standards.
