Description

Start a study of the novel The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate with this complete and colorful flipchart from Gifted and Talented Materials by Joyce Lansky.

First, students are introduced to the novel by answering questions about the cover, learning about the author, the Newbery award, and other questions concerning the book.

After students use a venn diagram to compare and contrast themselves to a gorilla, they will compete in a seven word dictionary race to introduce some of the vocabulary used at the beginning of the novel. Students will then complete a crossword puzzle before starting the book.

After reading, students are asked to study two photos in the book and decide why these were included.

Finally, using the gradual release teaching method, students are instructed to create a poem using hyperboles.
