Description

Do you need to incorporate art history into multi-cultural units in social studies or art classes? This unit — “The Northern Renaissance: Slide Shows on Five Master Artists” — will give you the visual and narrative tools you’ll need for many years to come. The narrator’s script, which accompanies each slide show, focuses on the artist’s style, childhood, art training, artistic reputation, curious facts, end of life, and each of the subjects or genres in which he created art. The slide shows contain the following:

  • Jan Van Eyck— 41 works of art described with more than 150 facts, and another 65 details about his life and art style
  • Hieronymus Bosch— 28 works of art described with more than 160 facts, and nearly 70 details about his life and art style
  • Albrecht Durer — 42 works of art described with more than 130 facts, and another 80+ details about his life and art style
  • Hans Holbein the Younger — 42 works of art described with nearly 150 facts, and more than 70 details about his life and art style
  • Pieter Bruegel the Elder — 23 works of art described with 70 facts, and more than 65 details about his life and art style

Included in this unit is a teaching manual, which will guide you in using the slide shows and narrator’s scripts, and a simple timeline that shows when each artist lived. In addition, a critical thinking assignment called “Artist Evaluation” will ask your students to analyze what they’ve learned about each artist as you present the slide shows. A “Grading Rubric” is included for your convenience.
