What educators are saying

This was such a great activity to get my 9th graders looking at primary sources and analyzing for historical context and content. It was the perfect way to get them to investigate the imperialism in Africa. Thank you!
This source was excellent in my classroom. Scaffolding is needed, but they were completely engaged. Thank you for sharing!

Description

Primary source activity (both text and political cartoons) related to European imperialism in Africa The Students should have knowledge of concepts such as the New Imperialism, "White Man's Burden," the "Civilizing Mission," and the Berlin Conference to complete the activity well. Using the primary sources, students analyze the underlying ideologies of Europeans in 19th century imperialism. The intention is that through the documents and scaffolded questions, students will see the gap between the internal politico-economic motivations behind the New Imperialism and their public moral "justifications" behind such policies.
