Description

Emma Lazarus's poem "The New Colossus" is perfect to start the American Dream unit with the promise of the dream.

Here is a graphic organizer that helps students focus on individual aspects and literary devices with the poem. It also contains a place to examine the structure of a Petrarchan sonnet and discuss WHY Lazarus chose that highly structured poetic form.

I partnered students based on pretest data, and they completed as much of the document as they could in 90 minutes. The following class, I projected a copy on the board and annotated with direct instruction to fill in any gaps of information.

Uploaded as a Word document so you may alter to fit your instruction and curriculum.
