Description

Micro Marketplace provides students with a basic understanding of economics. Students learn about business communities, goods and services, sticking to a budget, and making a profit. They will work in partners or small groups to create a business and design products that they will actually sell at a classroom marketplace. This Project Based Learning unit easily ties into ELA, Math, Art, and Technology. For example, students will write a persuasive sales pitch to entice customers to shop at their business (writing), balance a budget and count back change (math), engage in collaborative conversations with their classmates (speaking & listening), and design a logo and a slogan for their business on graphics software (art and technology).

This marketplace unit is inspired by the MicroSociety concept and a Social Studies StoryPath unit called Main Street: Understanding Goods and Services. It has been successfully implemented with second graders but could potentially be adapted for 1st through 6th graders. The anticipated length of the curriculum is about 1 month (depending on extensions). I have provided ideas for using the curriculum within one classroom or between a team of classrooms.
