The Close Reading story begins with in the 2000s when the Celts of present day Ireland celebrated All Hollow's Eve during a three day festival called Samhain in order to celebrate what was believed to be the time the dead would return to Earth. The story then explains how Trick-or-Treating evolved from children asking for food or money in exchange for songs or prayers into what we know and love today! Students will even get to learn the history of the Jack-o-Lantern (can you believe that the original Jack-o-Lanterns were made from turnips??)! The crossword puzzle is based off of information and clues from the story.
