How to use these The Great Gatsby Bell Ringer Reading Questions:

F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is a classic tale recounting the “Roaring 1920s.”  The novel is a fictional account of a love story between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, told from the narrative perspective of a partially-removed character, Nick Carraway. Fitzgerald's novel captures the materialism, excess, idealism, and economic crisis of 1920’s America.

These comprehension questions promote close reading and challenge students to move beyond online summaries to search for important details within The Great Gatsby.  They also serve as a diagnostic tool to assess students’ comprehension of the novel.

Use these bell ringer reading questions at the start of each class after assigning a chapter of The Great Gatsby for reading homework. After collecting students' responses, you can review the chapter as a class before reading the answers together. If students provide an incorrect response on the quiz but are able to demonstrate their knowledge in the discussion, you may wish to award them points on their quiz. This is a great option for differentiation.

This resource includes 3 separate versions of different comprehension questions for each chapter. If you teach multiple classes or blocks, you can use a different version for each block reading The Great Gatsby.

Additionally, a differentiated format has also been provided.  This format features all of the bell ringer comprehension questions in chapter-by-chapter worksheets.  You can use this option if you want to assign students guided reading questions to complete while they read The Great Gatsby. Note that these comprehension questions are only intended to evaluate comprehension; for deeper exploration, you might be interested in Mondays Made Easy's The Great Gatsby Novel Study Unit.
