The Edible Atom - Blended Learning Lab Activity
- Google Drive™ folder
Description
**Students can do this at home without a computer if you provide a copy of the research or provide students with access to the QR codes. Once they complete the analysis on the element they can use whatever food, snacks, candy, trinkets they have to make as a model of the atom.**
Take your usual model of the atom lab to a new level and keep your students actively involved. This activity comes with various levels of technology differentiation based on what your class/school/district allows.
After being assigned (or picking) an element between Neon and Krypton, students jump into research and watch expert chemists conduct labs and provide interesting facts about each element.
This lesson can be used as a culminating assignment at the end of the unit or if you want to up the rigor and guarantee students are using higher-order thinking skills, it can be used to introduce the unit.
This lab activity covers the following about the periodic table:
- element name
- symbol
- atomic number
- mass number
- number of protons
- number of neutrons
- number of electrons
- period number
- number of orbits
- group number
- number of valence electrons
- Bohr model
- Lewis structure/Lewis Dot
