Description

If you enjoy teaching about the anatomy of caterpillars and butterflies, you are going to LOVE Bess Beetles. These amazing insects are easy to hold because they move slowly, and they don't bite or fly! They can live in your classroom the entire school year, making it possible for you to break up your study into sections of time as they become available or as they fit into your other science themes. Your students will love holding and interacting with these insects, and you will be giving them an experience that many children do not have access to on their own.

This download is the second section from a unit I am in the process of creating called, "Exploring the World of the Bess Beetle".

This download includes:

15 pages of plans and activities in PDF:

pg 1--Coversheet

pg 2--Checklist of what to prepare for the complete unit

Where to purchase Bess Beetles

pg 3--Care and Handling of Bess Beetles

pgs 4 to 6--Days One to Four Lessons: "Anatomy--Body Parts" Pick and choose from 7 different activities: observing, 2 versions of labeling, building with play dough, step-by-step drawing, guided drawing, game "Roll a Bessbug Beetle"

pg 7--Bess Beetle adaptations, for your information

pgs 8-14 Student Journal Pages

pg 15--Credits

20 Slides in all of the following versions: PowerPoint, Google Slides, ActivInspire and PDF

The slides are written to service various levels of comprehension and attention spans, with fun facts and side bars for more mature learners. All of the pictures are actual copyrighted photos of bess beetles--none of that cutsie clip art that is often used by sellers when an image is needed.

The lesson plans are NOT scripted. Everything you need to know to teach this section is included in the slides. Read through them one time and then you are good to go. Use the plans for pacing, and as an explanation of student journal pages and activities.

Journal Pages: Choose the pages you want to use. Copy them as you go and compile them into student books at the end, or copy and staple into books before starting.

This is what to look forward to in the complete unit:

  • Meet the Bess Beetle
  • The Anatomy of a Bess Beetle (included)
  • The Lifecycle and Family Life of a Bess Beetle
  • Bess Beetles and their Preferences and Choice Chamber Experiment
  • Bess Beetles: Important Decomposers and Observation Activity

I would love your feedback! tooty.ta.teacher@gmail.com

NGSS3-LS3-2
Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment. Examples of the environment affecting a trait could include normally tall plants grown with insufficient water are stunted; and, a pet dog that is given too much food and little exercise may become overweight.
NGSS3-LS3-1
Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence that plants and animals have traits inherited from parents and that variation of these traits exists in a group of similar organisms. Patterns are the similarities and differences in traits shared between offspring and their parents, or among siblings. Emphasis is on organisms other than humans. Assessment does not include genetic mechanisms of inheritance and prediction of traits. Assessment is limited to non-human examples.
