Description

This lesson plan explains the importance of understanding that we all are different and unique, and that we may celebrate Thanksgiving with different foods and traditions. History of Thanksgiving is covered, what the first Thanksgiving meal consisted of, what the "traditional Thanksgiving meal" is perceived as, and the many, many different ethnic and regional Thanksgiving dishes that are served. Assessment, 4 activities, clip art, printables, no prep needed.

What is Thanksgiving

The History of Thanksgiving

How the United States is a large melting pot of different ethnic groups

Original Thanksgiving meal, with the Pilgrims

What is known as the "Traditional Thanksgiving Meal" today

Ethnic foods eaten during Thanksgiving, and where they came from

The different foods eaten at Thanksgiving from 16 different regions of the United States

Is Thanksgiving a "healthy meal?"

What a healthy meal consists of according to "Choose My Plate" guidelines

Activities are:

"Experience Thanksgiving in a different way by thinking of what you see, feel taste, smell and hear on past Thanksgiving Days and then write it down to keep as a memory " - example would be "I see my Mom standing in the kitchen baking pies, I hear her sing one of her favorite songs, I smell the turkey in the oven and I feel so happy."

Writing prompt-"Write About your own Thanksgiving Meal" you share with your family each year

"Name at least one of the foods that you eat at your meals that is a family tradition-is it a recipe that is passed down through generations of your family-does It come from a different country?"

Write or draw in the "Choose My Plate" image a healthy Thanksgiving meal, using the guidelines for "Choose My Plate."
