Text-marking & Annotation for answering a Text-Dependent Question (TDQ #1)
Description
This is a lesson I have created for analyzing text-dependent questions (TDQs) across multiple texts. One source is an article I wrote after compiling several tidbits of information from a variety of books, magazines, and online resources. The second source students use is a 1957 Disney cartoon titled that ties in with related information (YouTube link provided). After presenting the teacher-developed TDQ, we conduct multiple sessions of text-marking and annotating with students (and peer groups) to determine appropriate evidence from the sources to be used for formulating an effective answer statement to the TDQ. A structured framework is also provided to guide students as they conduct peer discussion. A text-marking/annotation key has been provided to assist the teacher, but please note that ideas from the reader(s) may vary slightly depending on subjectivity and opinions of certain parts of the passage or video.
