Description

Text Features & Text Structure Pizza Nonfiction Book Report

After reading any nonfiction book, students "make" a pizza while learning about text structure and reviewing other characteristics of nonfiction.

Each item in the lunchbox represents a different element. By the time students complete their project, they will have written about:

  • Text Structure
  • Text Features
  • Author's Purpose
  • Topic & Facts from the book

In addition, students write a book review, discussing what they liked and didn't like. Having students write about what they have read helps increase reading comprehension. Writing for an authentic audience increases student engagement in writing - students enjoy reading what their friends write when checking out books.

Craftivity book reports help engage students in reading and provide fine motor practice. When finished, students can present their books to the class and hang them for others to read.

Creating the Project

The project pieces are print and cut. Students color their pieces, then cut and glue them on a piece of construction paper. Students write the information on the inside of each piece. Students will need a copy of the pieces, scissors, glue, and a piece of construction paper.

The pieces are provided in both color and black and white, so teachers could choose which version to print.

Class time will vary depending upon how much time the teacher gives students in class to read and work on their case.

For my students, we spend part of a class period in the library looking for books. Students select a book, and I keep a record of the books selected.

Once everyone has a book selected, I give students 2 1/2 - 3 weeks to read and complete the project.

In addition, I take three - five days and have students present their books and projects. (I use this as an oral presentation grade.) I find it is better to do a few presentations each day instead of doing them all in one period.
