Every year the Texas Library Association selects 20 books recommended for students in grades 3-6 to read. The TLA website has great resources for tracking which books the kids read, but I wanted something else for accountability of my students. This is why I made these tests!
The tests and summary sheets in this product are for kids to complete after they've finished the book. My goal was to create something that would be easy for kids that read the book in its entirety, even if the book was a little bit above their level. (No trick questions or inferencing questions) These are not meant for higher level thinking or questioning, but only to verify if a student read the book or not. They are very easy comprehension questions, low level of Bloom's.
With this product, you get:
Two versions of each test
--One higher level (20 multiple choice questions per chapter book, 10-15 for others)
--One lower level (10 multiple choice questions per chapter book, 5-10 for others)
--Answer key includes page numbers that match with the book
--EDITABLE versions of both tests (opens in Microsoft Word)
Full page cover sheets made with icon art
--Color version, dark border/titles, or all black and white to color in
Summary Sheets
--Color, summarize, sketch a scene, give a rating and recommendation

How do I use this in my classroom?
I'm a 5th grade language arts teacher, and my students have to read 10 of the bluebonnet books as part of one major grade for the year. (I tell them about it in August, and they have until January to complete.) I purchase enough of the chapter books for the kids to use them in book clubs, and that is where the deeper level discussions and good reader responses come from. These tests are just one final validation at the end, as a way to verify they read it. It also helps for kids who don't read a book in a book club, and just took it home and read it on their own, so I can have a quick check that they at least read it to completion. I use many of the resources on the TLA website for tracking, since they are so generous to offer both student and teacher resources to help with that. I just wanted a little extra accountability, which is why I made these tests.
The greatest success I had in having students read Bluebonnet books was a student who told me "Some of these books I wouldn't have chosen on my own, but because they were a Bluebonnet book, I had too. Then I ended up really liking some!"
My favorite review from a previous package list:
"I love that there are two versions of each accountability test. I am an elementary librarian, so I work with a lot of kids. This will be a quick way to verify each student has actually read the books and to keep track of how many titles each student has read. I plan to use them in the library as an ongoing challenge/project with my students as well as in collaboration with classroom teachers. Added bonus: I am still working on reading through the list, and the school year is fast approaching. The little quizzes are also an easy way for me to be able to talk about the books with the kids, even if I haven't finished them yet."
