It provides a meaningful demonstration that our individuality combines with others to make a greater whole—a wonderful lesson for the holiday season!
Each student decorates, colors, and cuts out their own Christmas tree-shaped piece. Then—and here's the best part—everyone's pieces all perfectly connect to make a class Christmas tree made up of each student's contribution. How fun!​
I've done everything I can think of to make this a successful project—I even included a teaching video! It's as easy as color, cut, and assemble—with a bunch of fun options for you to make this project fit your specific class size and needs! It's fun for kids and easy for you as the teacher.
Once the pieces are finished and put together, they will make a stunning door decoration, bulletin board display, or a festive decoration just about anywhere in your school. Also, it would make an excellent decoration for holiday concerts or Christmas plays!
PROJECT DETAILS:
As I’ve designed it, a complete tree will have 25 pieces (but you can easily make many different size trees—making it great for any class size!).
- Students will each work on an individual tessellation piece in the shape of a Christmas tree—I have included 11 designs (each fitting on a regular 8.5" x 11" piece of paper.)
- They will color their trees.Â
- Once their piece is finished, they will cut it out.Â
- Then the individual tree pieces will be assembled into a larger, tessellated Christmas tree made up of everyone's individual tree pieces!

- Tessellation teaching video
- Star and tree base templates
- 11 tree designs (2 sets of each)
- "Blank" design with only lights so children can make up their own design
2 SETS INCLUDED:
I have included 2 sets of these 11 designs.
Set #1 has the background color of the tessellation tree designs already assigned (alternating between green and red like the examples in this resource.)
Set #2 does not have a background color assigned. This is to allow for any variations you want to make. For example, you might want all the pieces to have green backgrounds, or you might want your students to color them any color they want and make a multicolored tree—that, too, would be beautiful!
TREE SIZES:
The final tree measures approximately 28” wide at the base of the tree and 40” high without the star and base, and 50” tall, including the star and base.
Depending on your class size, you can easily make a smaller tree or a larger tree. You can build trees using 4, 9, 16, or 25 pieces. If space permits or you have a larger group, you can add another row and use 36 pieces, or even more (49, 64,...the whole school!?, details in the resource). Additional licenses are required for more than one teacher to use this resource.
You can use all the designs I’ve included. Or, you could select just a few of the designs. I’ve made it so the pieces will tessellate (connect together) so you can use them however you like!
TEACHING VIDEO:
Before you start this project, you could show my tessellation TEACHING VIDEO to your students. In this video, I give your students a basic introduction to tessellation (so you don't have to). I also explain to your students how this project works. Then you take it from there! Once you purchase this resource, you'll have access to this video.
