Description
For many math students, finding the lowest common denominator, changing denominators, not changing denominators, finding a reciprocal, and reducing fractions to lowest terms are complex issues and often very difficult concepts for mathphobic students. Although fractions are something every student should learn, often times numerous students are left behind in the mathematical dust when a math textbook is followed page by page. This math resource encompasses how I teach fractions so perplexed and bewildered students can be successful. It is aligned with the CCSS Standards for Fractions.
The teaching methods in this resource target the kinesthetic learner, the visual/spatial learner, the auditory student, and the student with a learning disability. The unconventional techniques described in this 11 page resource will always work. Sometimes the numbers will be large, but when the students learn the divisibility rules for 2, 3, 5, and 10, they can easily reduce most fractions. The divisibility rules are included on pages 10 and 11 of this resource.
I currently use these methods to teach fractions to remedial math students on the college level. Included is a link to a tutorial video that uses these strategies which I made for the college where I teach.
To practice vocabulary associated with fractions, have your students complete one of these crossword puzzles.
