What educators are saying

As a long-term sub in middle school cooking classes with no lesson plans, I scrambled to find activities. I ran out of time before being able to use this one with the kiddos, but it looks great and I will probably modify it to use in my French classes!

Description

Students taste a variety of food items and evaluate the taste, texture and visual appeal! After tasting each item, they will score and describe the taste, texture and visual appeal. Then, they will give each food item a total score by adding up those categories and writing an overall impression of that food item. Instructions emphasize that students should provide a written description in each box of the chart, not just a number score.

This PDF worksheet has one main page with instructions, a chart with 4 food item rows and a reflection question. There is a second page with up to 6 extra food item rows if there are more than 4 food items being tasted.

This activity could be used for a variety of classes...

  • Culinary Arts or Hospitality: student can compare their own dishes, other student dishes, store bought or restaurant items. This will allow students to compare and contrast food items while having to describe all of those details.
  • Nutrition or Health: students can taste a variety of similar items that have varying nutritional values. The students will compare and contrast the quality of those items. The teacher could reveal before or after tasting about their nutritional value.
  • Business or Economics: students can taste a variety of similar items that have varying prices. This will allow students to compare the quality of items and then determine if price impacts that quality. The teacher could reveal before or after tasting about their price differences.
