What educators are saying

A great tool to pair with this book! After working through it, I do think the book itself was a little low for my particular group of 7th graders, but the resource was good quality and engaging nonetheless.
I used this as a independent reading guide and it was perfect for my homeschooling student while he traveled.

Description

Great book study for February Black History Month or April Poetry Month! This 50-page workbook for Kwame Alexander's The Crossover includes vocabulary work, chapter work (fill-in-the-blank summaries + comprehension questions), TEN literature exercises, a comprehension review, and a final assessment. This novel study is available in print and digital (with Google Slides), and has a COMPATIBLE MODIFIED VERSION adapted with word banks under summaries for lower-ability learners. Key included.

For PRINT ONLY, CLICK HERE for the black + white PDF resource.

WORKBOOK CONTAINS:

  • COVER PAGE + TABLE OF CONTENTS (3 pages)
  • VOCABULARY WORK (6 pages): Workbook begins with scaffolded vocab activies for 12 terms found in the reading. Worksheets include definition matching, synonym matching, multiple choice word work, and usage.
  • CHAPTER WORK (22 pages): The 6 chapters of the book are divided in 10 manageable parts. Each part has 1 page (or 1-1/2) for a fill-in-the-blank summary, and 1 page for follow-up comprehension questions (short answer, T/F, and multiple choice). The summaries + comprehension work are great for study guide tools, small group activities, class discussions, or to monitor independent reading comprehension.
  • TEN LITERATURE EXERCISES (14 pages): There's a literature exercise after every part. Topics include: POV + author's purpose, figurative language (personification, similes, metaphors), character analysis (Venn Diagram activity), plot, motif, theme, connecting-to-the-story creative writing activity (poetry or letter), sequencing, & critical thinking.
  • COMPREHENSION REVIEW (3 pages): There is a comprehension crossword review for the book that works great as a test-prep activity. (Online link for digital use included.)
  • END-OF-BOOK TEST (6 pages): 45-item test with multiple choice and T/F questions.

The workbook is available as a black + white PDF, convenient for printing. It's also available as a full-color PDF for those who have the ability to share PDFs digitally, like with Kami, or if you'd like to upload all or portions to EASEL by TpT. I've converted the color workbook into Google Slides with text boxes and moveable pieces already in place. No prep for you! This is a convenient feature for digital learning or for those who prefer a paperless option.

A MODIFIED version in print and Google Slides is included for SPED or struggling learners.

The fill-in-the-blank summaries have been adapted to include word banks on the bottom of the page in the modified version. There's also a helpful hint on the sequencing activity. Students who’d benefit from modified curriculum can complete this COMPATIBLE version along side peers completing the regular version.

NOTE: The zip file contains PDF documents for printing and two links that will prompt you to "make a copy" of Google Slides. Slides will download right to your Google Drive. Google account required for this feature.

This GIANT summative crossword makes a fun end-of-book activity to help students recall 40+ key details in the book, including characters, places, events, & more. It's included as part of the workbook AND as a separate print-only freebie.

For a quick & simple resource for The Crossover that's NOT AN EXTENSIVE NOVEL STUDY, try chapter-by-chapter comprehension guide fill-in-the-blank summaries on TRI-FOLD BOOKMARKS or GOOGLE SLIDES. Content from these resources (chapter summaries) are included in the workbook.
