Historical Context:

The Boston Tea Party, a pivotal event in American colonial history, took place on December 16, 1773, against the backdrop of growing tensions between the American colonies and British authorities. The British Parliament had passed the Tea Act earlier that year, granting the British East India Company a monopoly on tea sales to the colonies and allowing it to sell directly to American consumers. This undercut local merchants and created a sense of outrage among the colonists, who saw it as a violation of their rights to representation and self-governance. In Boston, three tea ships—the Dartmouth, Eleanor, and Beaver—arrived with taxed tea, but the colonists were steadfast in their determination to resist what they saw as unjust British taxation without their consent. Faced with the challenge of whether to comply with unloading and selling the tea, colonial leaders grappled with their options. Ultimately, a group of colonists, many disguised as Mohawk Native Americans, boarded the ships and proceeded to destroy an estimated 342 chests of tea, emptying them into Boston Harbor. This symbolic act of defiance, known as the Boston Tea Party, not only protested the Tea Act but also represented a broader resistance to British colonial policies. The event further escalated tensions between the colonies and Britain, leading to a chain of events that eventually culminated in the American Revolutionary War and the quest for American independence.
