This is a 12 question viewing guide for TED Talk: The Danger of a Single Story. This resource talks about the importance of where we get our narratives from and making sure they tell the whole story.
How Do I Use This?
This resource is developed for both in-classroom use, where students can watch as a group, or as a homework assignment, where students can watch the video and fill in their questions at their own pace. I use this as a lead-in to my project DInner with Democracy, which helps students discover how to have civil conversations about politics with someone you may not agree with. After viewing, I put students in groups to discuss what “single stories” they might have, especially in regards to current political topics (abortion, immigration, how they view Republicans/Democrats, etc). I then show the Heineken beer ad, ‘World’s Apart,” illustrating other’s “single story,” and how they found common ground. After this, I introduce the project.
