What educators are saying
Great lesson! Loved seeing how my students interpreted their own symbolism in their lives and demonstrate that through their art!
Description
With this lesson plan, your students will WOW you with their Symbolic Self Portraits! Appropriate for 4th-8th grade, this lesson plan will get your students communicating ideas, thoughts, and stories through their art. Rather than leading them in traditional self portrait drawing, this lesson has students use symbols to tell viewers facts, stories, and experiences about themselves. My students' art completely blew me away and I was able to see a deeper, more thoughtful side to my little artists.
This packet contains an example picture of a completed self portrait, the full lesson plan, and a handout you can use as an artist's statement, an assessment, or a reflection/ criticism piece.
The lesson plan includes list of: Essential Questions, Vocabulary, Materials and Resources, Instructional Targets, and a Day by Day guide through the lesson. This is a tried and true lesson that my 4th grade students have enjoyed time and time again.
