Syllable Counting Mats

Do your students need extra practice segmenting and counting the syllables in spoken words? These syllable counting mats are the perfect resource for syllable segmentation! Simply print, cut, and laminate these picture mats and add manipulatives to create a fun and tactile syllable center game!

What you will receive: This product contains a total of 24 syllable counting mats. Each mat contains a picture, corresponding word, and three empty boxes. There are two different size options available for each counting mat (half-sheet or quarter sheet). The words represented are as follows:
1 Syllable: hat, sun, boy, bear, lamp, game, heart, star, worm
2 Syllables: cupcake, rainbow, pencil, backpack, snowman, mitten, lion, pizza, gumball, apple
3 Syllables: bumblebee, butterfly, astronaut, umbrella, bicycle

How to Play: Provide students with syllable cards and a small manipulative (counters, pom-poms, play dough, buttons, etc.). Students will select a mat and say the word. I encourage my students to place their hand under their chin and say the word, and then count the number of times their chin drops to determine the amount of syllables. After determining the number of syllables, students should place manipulatives in a corresponding number of boxes to match. For example, the word bicycle has 3 syllables, so students would place a manipulative in all 3 boxes on that mat.

You will also receive 3 pages of cut and glue sorting worksheets to accompany this game. Each worksheet contains 6 images from the sorting mats. Students will cut apart the images and glue them into the appropriate column based on the number of syllables in each word.
