Description

This Sweet Shop Measurement Activity Pack is the perfect product to teach length or add to your Math Centers when using non-standard units to measure objects.

This product includes activities for measuring length using non-standard units e.g. cubes and progresses to introduce measuring using a ruler with Candy themed rulers and the Candy Cane Center activity.


There are two different candy themed rulers: Candy Heart rulers and Gummy Bear rulers which challenge and extend your learners in a fun way.

I suggest you print and laminate the rulers as the kids will want to try them out again and again to measure different items in the classroom along with measuring all the items in the sweet shop that are included in this pack.

I have used this product in my own classroom and found that after engaging with these activites, ALL of my learners were ready to use real rulers to measure lines and objects and succeeded.

This pack includes:

Pages 2-3: Lollipop Lengths (Revise language: long, short, shorter than, longer than, shortest, longest.)

  • Cut and order each lollipop from shortest to longest. 

  • Revisit this activity at the end of the unit as an assessment tool by asking learners to measure and label each lollipop using one of the candy rulers or a real ruler.


Pages 4-7: Ice Cream Parlour (Measure length using non-standard units)

  • Measure each ice cream cone using non-standard units e.g. cubes, beads, paper clips etc. This allows for good discussion around how using different items to measure will get different answers. It highlights the need to use standard units to measure e.g. rulers, measuring tape etc.
  • There is a recording sheet provided on page 7 for children to write their answers.

Pages 8-16: Candy Rulers (Introduce the concept of measuring using rulers- candy rulers without numbers)

  • Cut and laminate as many candy rulers and gummy bears rulers that you need for your centers/groups.
  • Use the rulers to measure each item in the Sweet Shop. The answer keys provided are based on measuring each object when the letter is facing up the correct way.
  • The candy heart rulers match up perfectly to each object whereas the gummy bear rulers will have answers containg halves e.g. B = 2 and 1/2 gummy bears.
  • You can also use these rulers for the ice creams in the ice cream parlour as a fast finisher activity.

Pages 17-23: Candy Cane Center (Introduce the concept of measuring using rulers with numbers)

  • Print as many copies of the candy cane ruler that you need for your math centers/class. You can give children the option to measure the candy canes using the candy cane rulers on page 17 or the candy cane measuring center on page 18
  • This is a great activity for children to learn to line the candy cane up with the bottom (zero) of the candy cane ruler and read what number the top of the candy cane matches up with.
