Description

Start the new year with this superhero-themed collaborative SEL art project, with worksheets and templates included. Create classroom community and explore important social-emotional skills like kindness, empathy, perseverance, and cooperation. This community-building Art Lesson is great for a back-to-school activity or anytime of the year!

In this lesson, students identify and reflect on their own personal characteristics and abilities that empower them to face challenges and overcome obstacles every day.

Included in this Artful Lesson:

Teacher Guide (1 page)

· The Teacher Guide provides you with a list of art materials needed for the lesson as well as teaching suggestions and helpful tips.

Opening Activity (1 page) Also available as an EASEL activity!

· The Superpower Match-up activity focuses on the concept of everyday “superpowers” that students can use to help themselves, their friends and their family.

· Teachers can extend this part of the lesson to discuss the importance of social-emotional skills such as kindness, empathy, cooperation, optimism, perseverance, resilience, problem-solving, leadership, altruism, citizenship, etc.

Superheroes Art Lesson (1 page) Also available as an EASEL activity!

· Students draw themselves as a superhero with a symbol that represents their personal power.

· You may choose to print out this page for each student (available in both color and grayscale) or display the lesson on the interactive whiteboard.

Superhero Template (1 page) Sketch ideas with an EASEL activity!

· When the superheroes are displayed together, small hearts are formed between them, to emphasize solidarity and goodwill.

Your class superheroes can be displayed around common areas of the school including the entrance, hallway, cafeteria, classroom, etc. to celebrate the class and create a colorful, caring community.
