Super Bowl LVIII Middle School Math Group Project Problem Solving Football 2024

Are you ready for the big game? Your students will be. Let's take advantage of this opportunity and have them thinking about and discussing math during the week leading up to Super Bowl Sunday.

This is a Middle School math group project intended for up to four students per group. There are four tasks total - one for each student. Students can get in groups and divide the task according to their strengths.

Task 1 - Uses Excel or Google Docs spreadsheets to enter historical data for Super Bowl tickets sales and uses the linear equation to make predictions for future ticket sales.

Task 2 - Uses statistics (mean, median, and mode) to make a prediction for the winner and score of the game.

Task 3 - Will create a survey to poll students and friends on their favorite Super Bowl commercial. Data will be collected and displayed using a bar graph and pie chart.

Task 4 - Will calculate the cost for a student and a friend to travel and attend the Super Bowl. How many hours will they need to work at their part time job to afford the trip?

Team Task - There are six problem solving questions that will challenge your students and make your students think! The problems involve mean, algebraic expressions, writing and solving an equation in one variable, sales tax, fractions, decimals, and percents.

This project will challenge your students and they will enjoy it. All of the numbers and data collected are researched and up-to-date specifically for the 2024 Super Bowl. There are questions involving musical performers Usher and Post Malone and a X (formerly known as Twitter) battle between Chiefs star Travis Kelce and his girlfriend Taylor Swift. There are other questions about ticket prices on StubHub, Super Bowl commercials that we all love, and much, much more!

I would expect your students to spend an entire class period working on the team questions and then dividing up and discussing plans for their tasks. You could have them spend another day or two in class doing the individual tasks and discussing their findings or they could do them on their own at home.
