Why these lessons?
Engagement- I saw that my students needed more engagement and relation to their real-life in order to fully understand the skills, so I created these lessons to keep kids excited and involved the whole time.
Tiered Approach- We start with a real-life lesson, then practice as a whole group, work in a small group, work in partners, and finally work alone. We start with support on the skill and slowly take it away to really push the kiddos.
Rigor- The lessons keep kids thinking the entire time and push them to reach their potential.
Low-Prep- These lessons just need to be printed, copied, and they are ready to go! Most activities require little work beforehand for the teacher which makes a teachers busy life easier!
The lessons include:
Monday- Whole group lesson that focuses on learning about problem and solution. Using an anchor chart to teach Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then. Then, read "My Rotten Redheaded Brother" by Patricia Pollaco, do discussion questions, and write a summary.
Tuesday- Watch a Pixar video to do a small substitute, read "The Man Who Walked Between the Towers" by Mordicai Gersten (or any other picture book you want to use), do a visualizing/summarizing activity, then learn a summarizing song.
Wednesday- Look at summarizing notes and teach students how to turn it into a paragraph. Then, put students in groups to do a reader's theatre. They will put the reader's theatre on for the other students and then summarize each others plays!
Thursday- Students will look at the hardest time of their life and write a quick summary paragraph about it. Then, the students will read a book off of EPIC in pairs and create a summarizing poster.
Friday- Students will write a summary with pictures. Then, you will read "Larf" by Ashley Spires (which can be found on EPIC for free), do discussion questions, and write summaries. Using an anchor chart you will teach students how to give constructive feedback and they will give feedback to each other on their paragraphs. Then, give the assessment.
There is one small group lesson per day. You can do this with every group or just do the lessons you think the groups need. You differentiate them by what books you choose.
Monday: Students will get many different cards. They will mix them up and put them together to make summaries.
Tuesday: Students will read a story called "The Move" that is provided. Then, they will use many different colors to find the parts of the summary.
Wednesday: The students will read a story called, "The Show" that is provided. Together you will work on writing a paragraph.
Thursday: Students will read a leveled reader of choice and each person will have a role. Their role will help create the summary.
Friday: Students will read a leveled reader that you provide and write summary paragraphs and use constructive feedback on each others.
