Suicide is a difficult topic and one that hopefully never impacts your school community. The reality, however, is that it does cross the minds of many young people, including school children. In fact, suicide is the leading cause of death among young people and in pupils the numbers are alarmingly high. Over 200 schoolchildren are lost to suicide every year in the UK.

Aims of the session:

• Be aware of the common myths about suicide
• Have an understanding about why some people end their own life
• Be able to list some of the risk factors of suicide
• Be able to respond appropriately to someone with suicidal thoughts
• Have a good knowledge of factors that reduce vulnerability
