Description

This 8 slide Math Activ Studio flipchart helps students master subtraction in the vertical form. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 3.7 - 1st grade. This lesson begins with the “Problem of the Day” in which students are given word problem in which they must solve using the visual manipulatives (puppies in a basket) to subtract. The student can manipulate and use the “cross out” technique with the visual manipulatives on the flipchart. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary terms needed to understand the content of the lesson: zero, subtract, subtraction sentence, difference, with the necessary math symbols. Next, the teacher introduces the concept of writing subtraction in the vertical form. The next page is a group activity in which students use virtual counters on the Promethean Board to show subtraction in the vertical form. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The next page gives a review and closure question to check for students’ understanding of the lesson taught. The last page gives a math journal entry using higher order thinking in which students must write 7 minus 2 equals 5 using two different ways, then write the difference for both problems.
