Stick Figure Statue Posters Deck 1 for Movement Activities in Music

Ever wonder how to get students to listen to music that is "different" for them? Or looking for a warm up activity that gets the students moving to music without getting out of control? Stick figure statues is one of my favorite activities for both of those situations-- especially with fourth and fifth grade music students.

This is my favorite activity for the first day of school, as well as after a break, or when in a teachers' classrooms.

Stick figure statues is a simple movement activity that can go along with any song you want to introduce students to in your elementary music class. I have used it for Classical music, Japanese music, pop music--- seriously, you can do anything. You hold up one of the cards, and students make that pose. After a certain number of beats (generally 4 or 8), you switch the card and students change their pose. You can change the frequency of the switches, or have a student come be the leader and change the cards.

I have used this activity with students as young as kindergarten and as old as fifth grade, and they all love it. It is especially good if you want to introduce students to moving to music in a low-stakes way at the beginning of the year. You could even use it as a warm up in middle school choir or high school choir (or children's choir).
