Description

Students demonstrate their understanding of the 3 states of matter using one of the two projects or assessment included in this resource. Each project aligns with NGSS standard PS 5-1-1. One project gives students a choice in which of the 5 they would like to complete. A second project option has students answering review questions about solid, liquid, and gas substances before completing 3 hands on activities to show their level of understanding through CER ( claim, evidence, reasoning ) responses of how particles behave in different phases of matter. Finally, a review sheet and 32 question assessment are included.

Students will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how particles in states of matter behave even though they cannot be seen.
  • Create a model to illustrate how particles change from one state to another through melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation.

This states of matter project includes:

NGSS5-PS1-1
Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen. Examples of evidence could include adding air to expand a basketball, compressing air in a syringe, dissolving sugar in water, and evaporating salt water. Assessment does not include the atomic-scale mechanism of evaporation and condensation or defining the unseen particles.
